Streaming using SMIL
Check out our projects:
Live Streams
Pre-Made Video
This was a grand experience. SMIL is really easy and does some cool stuff, and we (Jet, Ed and I) were able to get something together without much trouble. After kicking around a few ideas, we decided to mock a mockery, that is, make a fake mystery science theater 3000 set. We used a 4 player layout, 3 players were aligned along the bottom and played live streams of each of us, while the 4th window, which sat atop the others, played the 'movie' that served as fodder for our jokes. It actually works pretty well, except for the lag (about 30 seconds worth..), but I think we were all happy with the way it turned out.
One of the best things to come out of learning SMIL is the realization that I may be able to pull off the video compositing thing I was working on last semester in Java in a much simpler and quicker way. I'll still need Java for the network synchronization part, but at least the front end will be easier.
Aside from SMIL, I really liked the other stuff about the Flash Com Server. I hadn't seen that stuff since first semester and feel that I understand it better now than I did then. Things have kinda come full circle regarding my experience with flash at ITP; I worked with it early on, didn't touch it for over a year, and here it comes again in my last semester. Cool. Lots to think about and continue learning.
