Volition - The act or an instance of making a conscious choice or decision.

Peace as a lifestyle commodity, is the general idea of my undergraduate thesis project, and what is a better way to teach peace then through the philosophies of Buddhism.
I had decided to create a Buddhist Educational Heritage Center for World Peace. The main purpose of the facility is to target a change. A fundamental change in the human mind that will allow wider horizon and a different, more positive point of view.

The educational center, although characterized by its unique Buddhist philosophy, geared to be nonsectarian and open to all. It is based upon 3 principles - meditation, discipline and knowledge, which lead to the discovery of an important Buddhist philosophy called Egolessness.
Egolessness basically means the awareness of the "self"; the realization that the self is not solid, but rather continuously in process, and is a way to the development of a free and liberated way of being.

In the effort to be a part of the struggle for peace, Volition will conduct a major event that will take place once a year and will last a month. During this event, the students and faculty will act as curators and will collect art pieces depicting the concept of peace. These pieces with be exhibited along the unique angled walls along the facility's corridors.

The site I had found is a two story educational facility on the 12th and 13th floors, and its footprint is long and narrow. My greatest challenge was to be able to accommodate for the right amount of classes and necessary rooms, while working around such limiting layout. The general concept I formed relates to the philosophy of individuality. How do I find the relationship between a physical structure and the idea of individuality? My solution was to create a long corridor (over 100 feet) in the shape of a rounded corners parallelogram. I then divided the "tunneled" corridor to horizontal segments. By rounding the corners I have eliminated the visual separation between the floor, wall and ceiling, which creates a clearer separation between the segments.

Each cell stretches between two columns (distance varies) and is leaning to the opposite side of the adjacent one. This configuration creates a line of fluctuating cells that partially hide each other.
The pieces of art are hung within the vertical surfaces of each cell, in a way that people who are viewing the art seem as if they are alone in the cell, since the art work is hidden to a viewer passing by trough the corridor. The rooms along the corridor are naturally effected by the slanted walls, which adds more interest.

The drawings were created with AutoCAD, FormZ, Lightscape, and Photoshop.
